A Day in the Life of Colorado Timberdoodlers

A

Kim from Colorado

Meet Our Family:

Hi, I’m a stay-at-home mom with two kids–an almost-5-year-old boy and 11-month-old girl.

Last year we bought a small house on 40 acres and we have been collecting animals. So far we have dogs, goats, turkeys, and chickens.

My son just finished preschool and we are trying out homeschooling for kindergarten. He loves being outside catching bugs and feeding the chickens.

Our Morning:

Today we started out making oatmeal. My almost-5-year-old son, W, mainly watched and talked because he likes talking A LOT. He asked what the plan was for the day and said he hoped he got to watch Pokemon. My 11-month-old girl, E, was crawling around and I sent my son to distract her a couple times. We ate breakfast, W put his bowl in the sink, and we hung out for a bit until it was time for E to take her morning nap and we could do some schoolwork.

So our school day started at 9:30. We did letter blending in our Phonics Pathways book and a page in our Reading Lesson book. Then W went outside and played.

E woke up, and W helped me fold diapers and clean downstairs. After that he watched some Pokemon, while I made lunch.

Our Afternoon:

W and I ate pizza for lunch, and I fed E baby food and finger foods. Then we did W’s Timberdoodle Mathematical Reasoning book. W likes doing it the most because he is pretty good at it, and it has built his confidence up.

W then asked some questions about the solar system so we watched a 3-minutes video I found online on it. He also has an Usborne book on planets I really like, but I like to change things up and show him information in different mediums.

W is also really into catching bugs right now so he built some Lego traps for them. So that was our school day.

It is pretty simple right now, and I think we will keep kindergarten curriculum pretty low key, and add in a couple more things in the fall.

Our Evening:

I made fried rice for dinner, which we ate when my husband got home at 6:00. E is really into finger food right now so dinner tends to be a huge mess that needs a lot of cleaning up afterwards, and the floor was swept several times so she wouldn’t be putting everything in her mouth.

The high of the day was just getting to enjoy summer starting and not have to drive anywhere.

The low was probably that my son wasn’t listening very well today so it was a day of lots of repeating myself during school time and outside of that as well. Sometimes when there is less routine, getting everyone to focus is difficult!

We always enjoy when my husband gets home though, it is a time for hugs and kisses and just getting to be together, even if its while sweeping floors and doing house projects.

Favorite Timberdoodle Tool:

I like The Reading Lesson book a lot as it doesn’t require much preparation to do the lessons and my son is making good progress in learning how to read. We also recently started Phonics Pathways, which is a nice addition, but does require more prep time on my part so we haven’t done it as frequently.

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

I saw many enthusiastic comments about it in a Facebook group and checked it out to see what everyone thought was so great. My son was not enjoying our unit study curriculum, and I was looking for something different.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

Cost!

What helped you overcome that?

Our state has a program to help with homeschool funding.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

Try something different and see if it works better.

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

We are a military family, which makes homeschooling an attractive choice because school doesn’t have to be interrupted too much if we move.

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

I appreciated the play based approach. I also loved how STEM heavy it is.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

It was a lot of money to put forth without knowing whether my son would like it. It’s 100% worth it. But I didn’t know that before I purchased 😉

What helped you overcome that?

Your website, descriptions, and the fact the curriculum can be secular. The description of what’s in the kits intrigued me.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

Not to put too much pressure on themselves. They’re homeschooling to make a change, after all. Keep it fun and engaging. And I would personally advise not to do traditional school at home. Make the most of it and make it work for your individual(s). Also, Timberdoodle is the best curriculum in my opinion (and I’ve purchased/downloaded around 6 different Pre-k curriculums).

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

We live on a farm that we are slowly turning into a homestead. We incorporate unit studies as my oldest shows interest in certain subjects. We also love the unschooling philosophy even though we don’t follow it religiously. Another thing that sets us apart is that we are a secular family. It’s hard to find curriculum and groups to accommodate that.

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

I was looking for secular homeschool kits, and Timberdoodle was one of the first companies listed in my searches. I was instantly drawn to the bright colors and how FUN it looked. As I dug deeper, I realized that this was the curriculum for us. It approached the subjects I wanted to teach. I, of course, weighed other options but at the end of the day, I felt as if Timberdoodle was exactly what I was looking for.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

That I wouldn’t be able to figure out what to do with all of these things. But the online scheduler made it SO easy.

What helped you overcome that?

The online schedule generator.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

Take breaks through the day, and don’t do too much at once. We do school 4 days a week, but the beauty of homeschooling is that if something comes up, you actually do have weekends to complete work too (which we have utilized!). Just do your best!

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

I have twin girls so I called Timberdoodle to customize our kit so we’d have double the workbooks but not double of EVERYTHING (such as text books, etc.). It worked out perfectly!

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

I stumbled upon Timberdoodle in my homeschool curriculum research online. I was instantly drawn to it. I just knew we had to give it a try. It really fit with our season of life. I was brand new to homeschool and wanted something that was all put together for me. I was overwhelmed by doing it on my own. Using Timberdoodle had given me so much confidence in my homeschooling abilities.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

First, the cost. Second, would it be too much for us? I think it did end up being a little too much, but we learned how to work it to fit our life and schedule very quickly.

What helped you overcome that?

Honestly, my husband has a “no expense spared” point of view with our kids’ education, so he helped with that. Otherwise, I just decided to go for it.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

I actually have recommended Timberdoodle to overwhelmed moms. I think at the very least it’s an amazing starting point. But if they’re very overwhelmed, I always say start small. Go with the basics and just have fun.

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

We’re secular. We like to think of ourselves as eclectic, with a strong influence from Charlotte Mason; and a lot of diverse types of thinking.

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

I needed a complete program. I have been continually amazed at how accessible and all encompassing the program is. My daughter attends online charter her teacher says it is a great program and she has EVERYTHING she needs! As a parent that is a relief. It is like Timberdoodle did all the research of all the best things in education from around the world and put it together. So grateful and worth EVERY penny.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

Maybe the price if I had to pick something.

What helped you overcome that?

It is actually very reasonably priced if you consider time saved, the expertise of the people putting the program together. Years of homeschooling experience.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

I would absolutely suggest Timberdoodle.

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

I’m actually a working single mother.

Barb Loya, Ohio mom of 4 year old

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

Timberdoodle offered such a nice variety of activities and hands-on learning materials that drew me to the curriculum. I also liked how I could customize the kit and substitute, add or delete items. I also liked the weekly schedule generator that I could customize which helps keep me on track each week and provides a record of what we completed each week.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

I was a little intimidated with the number of items I chose in my kit.

What helped you overcome that?

I found a way to rotate the materials to make the number of items easier to manage. The weekly schedule checklist made the record keeping much easier as well.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

Start off slowly and gradually add new materials. You do not have to complete everything every week. Be flexible and follow the lead of your child. It makes it less stressful and a whole lot more fun!

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

My child is the only child so we work with another family once a week who has the same curriculum from Timberdoodle. Their child is the same age as my son so he gets a chance to work with someone else and learn with someone else once a week. It also helps to have another mom to bounce things off of and share ideas of what works and what solutions can work for things that need a little adjustment.

What made you consider Timberdoodle for the first time?

This was my first year homeschooling. Neither my husband or I come from homeschooling families, so I felt incredibly intimidated. I looked at other curriculums, but they were 4 times the cost and seemed like they would require tons of work from me to prepare the lessons. Enter Timberdoodle! I found it on a random Google search and could tell I’d hit the jackpot. I loved being able to customize the curriculum kits and have been really pleased with nearly everything in the 2 kits I ordered.

Before you decided to use Timberdoodle, what was your biggest obstacle or concern about using a Timberdoodle Curriculum Kit?

I had no reservations about the kits. I only was concerned about customizing it in a way to best fit where my family is at right now.

If your friend decided to start homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, what would you tell her?

Homeschooling seems much harder than it is!

Is there anything unique about your family that you’d like to share with us?

We’ve been considering homeschooling for years, but kept telling ourselves we were too busy. But this year we took the leap – despite a cross-country move, an incredibly demanding job change for my husband and the birth of our 5th child. We are truly proof that homeschooling can work for you no matter how crazy your life is! Not only that, but it can be one of the best decisions you ever made.
