1985 – Why Call It Timberdoodle?

1

Diesel and Wahoo
If you were looking to name your homeschool supply business, Timberdoodle isn’t likely to sit at the top of your list of names. But for us it has been perfect, unique enough to aid people in remembering it, and not too terribly hard to spell for Google! So how did we get there?

From early on Mom wanted to be the next Dale Evans and when she and Dad met in college, he was pursuing his dream of becoming a farmer. Both graduated and married, then picked out a champion pedigreed Golden Retriever puppy to become the foundation of their show hunting dog kennel. The namesake of Timberdoodle is a small elusive game bird, a worthy symbol of the intended future: a well-researched, expertly trained and successfully shown family of Golden Retrievers. The business name was successfully registered, but the beautiful Golden Retriever did not cooperate with their plans.

While still attempting to get the kennel up and running, Mom was busy teaching my sisters and I. As we learned, she would take our favorite tools to meetings where other moms fell in love with them too, and ordered their own copies. Soon she realized that if she purchased in case quantities she could save the other moms money, while industriously tucking a little away to supplement the family income.

Money was tight in those days, so rather than register another business name, Mom and Dad simply took the name Timberdoodle for the new homeschool supply business. Running Timberdoodle was a long way from their initial career dreams, and has blessed them (and us!) in ways they couldn’t imagine in 1985.

Can you believe it has been 25 years since Timberdoodle began? We can’t either, so we’ve planned 5 weeks of festivities to celebrate!

For 25 days we’ll share a tidbit or story from Timberdoodle‘s history, along with a quick question for you to answer. Answer the question on Facebook and be automatically entered in the drawing for the free item of the day. The next morning we will draw a random number (compliments of random.org) and the person who wrote that comment wins. (IE, if 47 comments are left on the Facebook post, and the random number generated is 32, the person who left the 32nd comment will win the day’s prize.)

Fine Print

  • 1 entry per person, per prize.
  • To be eligible you must have a USA shipping address for us to send the prize to, with the exception of the October 15th drawing, which may be emailed!
  • Yes, it is possible for someone to win multiple times!
  • No, we do not have any way for people to enter without being on Facebook. I apologize for the disappointment as we would love to include everyone, but tracking comments in multiple places would make it difficult to be fair to everyone.

We hope you’ll join us for 25 days of stories and giveaways, and celebrate with us God’s blessings over the past 25 years.

Perfect Homeschooling?

P

Do you think that you’re the only one that doesn’t have a “perfect homeschool?”
Are you embarrassed by what you or your children HAVEN’T learned?

When I read this post from Renee last week, her perspective was refreshingly honest.
Take heart homeschoolers no one is perfect, that’s why we need a Savior!

Don’t sweat the small things, your children’s hearts are what is most important! Enjoy your time with your kids, focus on the eternal!!

Sonic Booms Explained

S

Tuesday we discovered that we really didn’t understand what “breaking the sound barrier” practically means.

When two F-15 fighter jets broke the sound barrier (responding to an attempted intercept of an aircraft which had invaded the Temporary Flight Restriction area imposed for President Obama’s visit to Seattle) and triggered sonic booms which were heard throughout the Puget Sound region, we realized that while everyone was talking about the event no one could explain it.

If you also find yourself struggling to explain the concept to your homeschoolers, than you will probably be just as grateful as we are for this short explanation complete with live illustrations!

Giving Up Christianity or Christ?

G

Real article. Real perspective. Real beliefs. Real person. Can your homeschoolers spot the fallacy in this writer’s article? Are your children prepared to defend the faith?

“Today, I quit being a Christian.”

With those words last week on Facebook, Anne Rice delivered a wake-up call for organized religion. The question is whether it will be recognized as such.

“I remain committed to Christ as always,” she wrote, “but not to being ‘Christian’ or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to ‘belong’ to this…”
